Federal Gas Tax Suspension Proposal Gains Support From Trump

WASHINGTON D.C. (TXAN 24) — Donald Trump is backing a renewed proposal to temporarily suspend the federal gas tax as fuel prices remain a major political issue heading into the summer travel season.

The proposal would pause the federal gasoline tax for several months, with supporters arguing it could provide financial relief to drivers nationwide. The federal gas tax currently stands at 18.4 cents per gallon for gasoline and 24.4 cents for diesel fuel.

Supporters of the measure say the suspension would especially benefit commuters and trucking industries facing higher transportation costs. Critics, however, argue the move could reduce funding for highway infrastructure projects supported through federal transportation programs.

The issue has quickly resurfaced in Washington as lawmakers debate inflation, transportation funding and energy policy ahead of the 2026 midterm election cycle.

Texas drivers, particularly those commuting long distances across major metro areas, could see modest savings at the pump if the proposal advances through Congress.
