HUNTSVILLE, Texas (TXAN 24) – A violent criminal, Steven Lawayne Nelson, was executed by the State of Texas on Wednesday, February 5th, following years of legal battles. Nelson was convicted for the 2009 murder of Clinton “Clint” Dobson, a pastor at NorthPointe Baptist Church in Arlington, Texas.

Nelson murdered Pastor Dobson in a brutal robbery attempt, beating him viciously and suffocating him with a plastic bag. During the incident, Nelson also attacked a woman who was at the church. While awaiting trial for the pastor’s murder, Nelson killed a fellow inmate in the Tarrant County Jail.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who fought to enforce Nelson’s death sentence, expressed his thoughts on the execution, stating, “After years of legal battles, Steven Nelson was punished for his heinous crimes and justice has finally been served. My heart is with the family and friends of Pastor Clint Dobson, as well as the loved ones of every victim who suffered at the hands of this monster."

The execution was carried out by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice in Huntsville, Texas. Paxton emphasized the gravity of ensuring justice for victims, saying, “Ensuring that Texas law is upheld and capital sentences are carried out is a somber responsibility. Victims deserve justice, and criminals who commit heinous crimes such as this must be punished.”
