
COMMERCE, Texas (TXAN 24) — In a thrilling game just days after its official name change, East Texas A&M (formerly Texas A&M-Commerce) pulled off a 19-14 comeback win over Stephen F. Austin on Saturday. The Lions, now 2-8 on the season, delivered an inspiring performance to mark the occasion.
Trailing 14-10 at halftime, the Lions rallied in the second half. Kicker Luke Jackson’s 32-yard field goal trimmed the deficit to one point in the third quarter, setting up quarterback Ron Peace’s game-winning 5-yard touchdown pass to Dayan Bilbo in the fourth. Peace finished with an impressive 312 passing yards, hitting 22 of 45 attempts and throwing two touchdowns. Jaden Proctor added 102 receiving yards on just two catches, and Tyson Schilling caught a crucial first-half touchdown pass.
For Stephen F. Austin, now 6-4, quarterback Gavin Rutherford completed 26 of 41 passes for 193 yards, while running back Qualan Jones added 95 rushing yards and a touchdown. Receiver Kylon Harris had a big game with 12 catches for 119 yards, but it wasn’t enough to stop the Lions.
It was a memorable night as East Texas A&M celebrated both a new era and a hard-fought win.
