TYLER, Texas (TXAN 24) — The City of Tyler has officially announced the return of its curbside recycling program, resuming service Monday, July 14, after more than a year-long suspension.

The pause began after a devastating fire shut down Rivers Recycling in Kilgore, the facility previously responsible for processing the city’s curbside recyclables. Now, with the opening of the new Northeast Texas Regional Materials Recovery Facility (NETX), Tyler has secured a contract to resume curbside collection with a fresh start.

All previously registered customers will be automatically re-enrolled unless they canceled during the suspension. New or returning customers can enroll by contacting Solid Waste at SolidWaste@TylerTexas.com or calling (903) 531-1388. The service costs $5.96/month, plus tax, and includes a recycling cart with twice-a-month collection.

To ensure pickup:

  • Items must fit inside the cart.

  • Cardboard must be broken down.

  • Aluminum and plastic bottles should be crushed.

  • No glass is accepted.

Carts should be placed by 6 a.m. on collection day and positioned at least six feet away from objects like mailboxes and vehicles.

What’s accepted:

  • Aluminum and tin cans

  • Plastics #1–#7 (rinsed, lids removed)

  • Cardboard, paper products, cartons, plastic bags, aerosol cans

What’s not accepted:

- Glass, PVC, Styrofoam, contaminated items

For those who prefer drop-off recycling, the Tyler Recycle Center (418 N. Bois D’Arc Ave.) remains open and now accepts all plastics except PVC and Styrofoam, thanks to a new partnership with Cyclyx International.
