CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (TXAN 24) — Officials in Corpus Christi have enacted new water restrictions as drought conditions continue to strain the region’s supply, prompting concerns for residents, businesses, and agriculture.

City leaders announced Stage 2 water restrictions this week, limiting outdoor watering to once per week and urging conservation across all sectors. The move follows declining levels at key reservoirs, including Lake Corpus Christi and Choke Canyon Reservoir, which collectively serve as the city’s primary water sources.

According to local officials, recent rainfall has not been sufficient to offset months of dry conditions across South Texas. The restrictions are designed to extend available supply while officials monitor weather patterns heading into the summer months—typically the region’s hottest and driest period.

Residents are being asked to fix leaks, reduce non-essential water use, and avoid washing vehicles or driveways unless necessary. Violations of the restrictions could result in fines as enforcement efforts increase.

City staff say additional measures could be implemented if conditions worsen, including stricter limits or potential surcharges on high water usage. Meanwhile, long-term discussions continue around expanding water infrastructure and exploring alternative sources, such as desalination.

The drought reflects a broader trend impacting much of Texas, where fluctuating weather patterns have placed increased pressure on water systems statewide. Officials stress that conservation now could help prevent more severe shortages later.
