UNITED STATES (TXAN 24) -- Cameron Diaz is ready to make a return to the big screen after a decade-long hiatus, and she’s hinting at the possibility of a sequel to the beloved 1994 film The Mask.
In a recent interview with Access Hollywood to promote her new Netflix film Back In Action, Diaz expressed her enthusiasm for revisiting her role as nightclub singer Tina Carlyle—but only if Jim Carrey is involved.
Diaz starred opposite Carrey in The Mask, where he portrayed Stanley Ipkis, a mild-mannered bank teller who discovers a magical mask that transforms him into a zany, crime-fighting alter ego. The film was a massive hit and helped catapult Diaz to stardom.
While Diaz is on board for a sequel, Carrey’s participation is key. In December 2024, Carrey shared his thoughts on returning to the role in an interview with Comicbook.com.
He said, “It has to be the right idea,” adding that he would be open to a sequel as long as the concept was solid. “It’s not really about the money. I joke about the money… But I never know. You can’t be definite about these things,” he explained.
Carrey, who has previously hinted at retirement, also stated that he would reconsider if a compelling project came his way. “As soon as a good idea comes your way, or a group of people that you really enjoyed working with… things tend to change,” he said.
In the same interview, Diaz also mentioned her interest in revisiting another iconic role from her past—the 2000 action-comedy Charlie’s Angels. Diaz starred alongside Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu in the successful reboot. Diaz joked about reaching out to Liu, pitching Jamie Foxx (her Back In Action co-star) for the role of Bosley. “I’m gonna text [Lucy Liu] right now and pitch her Jamie as Bosley,” Diaz said.
Back In Action, a new action-comedy currently streaming on Netflix, marks Diaz’s return to acting after a long break. Her potential involvement in future projects, including a The Mask sequel or a Charlie’s Angels reunion, has sparked excitement among fans eager to see the actress back in action.
As for The Mask, fans will have to wait for the green light from Carrey to know whether the long-awaited sequel will ever become a reality. But if Carrey’s on board, Diaz is more than ready to don Tina Carlyle’s glamorous persona once again.
“If Jim’s on board,” Diaz said with a smile, “I mean, I’ve been riding those coattails from day one.”
