SOURCES: Cherokee Co. Sheriff Accused of Cover-Ups, Targeting Citizens, and Misleading Officials

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Texas (TXAN 24) — A growing wave of concern is brewing behind the scenes in Cherokee County, where multiple sources have reported that Sheriff Brent Dickson is personally calling city officials to insist he is “not corrupt.”

The alleged calls, including at least one to a Rusk City Council member, have sparked more questions than answers — especially as TXAN 24 News has inquired about legal options to remove any sheriff from office in the State of Texas.

Cherokee County insiders describe mounting frustration from former and current deputies who claim the sheriff’s temper, favoritism, and questionable leadership have led to mismanagement, poor training, and potentially millions in pending lawsuits. Among the most serious allegations: evidence being withheld in criminal cases, use-of-force complaints being ignored, and internal corruption being swept under the rug to protect allies.

There are also reports of suspicious in-custody deaths at the county jail, with growing concerns that the county’s insurance provider may refuse to defend the sheriff’s department in court, and claims that policy-violating deputies are quietly allowed to resign instead of being investigated.

While these claims remain unverified, the growing smoke surrounding Cherokee County law enforcement may soon force the hand of county commissioners, the judge, or even outside investigators such as the FBI.

TXAN 24 News is currently vetting documentation and gathering statements—we will be reaching out to the Texas Rangers and FBI for comments as well.
