TYLER, Texas (TXAN 24) — A middle-aged white male died by suicide Monday afternoon near Tyler Legacy High School, according to authorities.

Officials say the man called 911, expressing a mental health crisis and suicidal thoughts. While on the phone with dispatch, he reportedly took his own life with a single gunshot to the head.

Emergency responders were dispatched to the area but arrived after the fatal shot had been fired.

Tyler ISD confirmed that no students or staff were ever in danger. However, school officials are coordinating with counselors to support any students who may have been affected by the heavy police presence near the campus.

The man's identity has not been released pending notification of family.
