TEXAS (TXAN 24) — As National Safe Boating Week approaches and Texans prepare for summer trips on lakes, rivers, and coastal waters, boating safety experts are reminding families and renters to take precautions before leaving the dock.

According to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, Texas recorded 169 recreational boating incidents and 24 fatalities in 2024. Officials say more than 91% of boating fatality victims were not wearing life jackets.

BoatBooker CEO and boating travel expert Vukan Simic said many boating dangers can be avoided through preparation before a trip begins.

“Texas has a huge boating culture, from lakes and rivers to coastal trips, but the basics still matter every time,” Simic said. “For families, vacationers, and first-time renters, the danger is often assuming someone else has already checked the life jackets, weather, route, and emergency plan.”

Simic recommends Texans check all life jackets before departure, especially for children, review updated weather conditions immediately before heading out, designate a sober operator before the trip begins, and discuss emergency procedures with everyone on board.

“A good boating trip should feel relaxed, but it should never feel vague,” Simic added. “If nobody can clearly answer where the safety equipment is, what the weather plan is, or who is responsible for staying sober, that is a sign to pause before heading out.”
