TYLER, Texas — Every Thursday, TXAN will partner with Nicholas Pet Haven to spotlight one incredible animal in search of a forever home. This week, we’re honored to introduce you to Barret, a survivor whose spirit has never stopped shining.

Barret’s Story: A Fighter with a Gentle Soul

On New Year’s Eve, while many were ringing in new beginnings, Barret was abandoned. Broken, bleeding, and alone. He had been used as a bait dog in a dog fighting ring. He arrived with painful lacerations on his front legs, and dental injuries consistent with cruel mistreatment. His body told a story of cruelty no animal should ever endure.

But Barret didn’t give up.

With months of care, patience, and love from Nicholas Pet Haven, he slowly began to heal. Not just physically, but emotionally. Day by day, this brave boy learned that not all humans are bad. And now? He’s ready to give his heart to someone who will never let it be broken again.

Who Barret Is Today

Barret is about 2 years old, and despite everything he’s been through, he’s one of the most affectionate dogs you’ll ever meet. He loves going for long walks, handing out sloppy kisses, and earning treats for showing off his tricks (he’s mastered sit and shake!).

• Gets along well with other dogs, especially friendly females his size

No cats, please. That’s a firm boundary for him

• Likely great with gentle, loving kids

• Always open to meet and greets with other dogs to make sure it’s a good match

He’s a goofball with a tender heart, the kind of dog who just wants to be near you, safe, loved, and home.

 Barret’s Vetting

Barret is:

Fully vetted

Neutered

Up to date on all shots

Heartworm negative

He’s healthy, strong, and so ready to start his new life.
