TYLER, Texas (TXAN 24) — For all the pride Texas takes in its sports, the reality is hard to ignore. Outside of baseball, the Lone Star State has struggled to produce championships at the professional level.

Over the last 25 years, the state has claimed just five major titles across the big four leagues, and three of those have come from baseball in the last decade alone.

  • The Houston Astros started the state’s modern championship wave, winning the World Series in 2017 and again in 2022.

  • Then came the Texas Rangers, who finally broke through in 2023, ending one of baseball’s longest championship droughts.

  • Together, they have made baseball the new heartbeat of Texas sports.

But beyond the diamond, the story changes.

  • The Dallas Mavericks have not reached those heights since Dirk Nowitzki’s magical 2011 run.

  • The San Antonio Spurs have been rebuilding since their last championship in 2014.

Football, the sport most associated with Texas, has delivered even less.

  • The Dallas Cowboys last won a Super Bowl in 1996.

  • The Houston Texans have never advanced beyond the divisional round.

For a state that lives and breathes competition, Texas’ recent record shows a surprising imbalance.

Baseball has become the standard-bearer, while basketball and football, once the pride of Texas, are still searching for their next parade.

Until those trophies return to Dallas, Houston, or San Antonio, the Lone Star State remains rich in passion but short on titles.
