RUSK, Texas (TXAN 24) — The police chief credited with exposing alleged corruption inside the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office has been placed on non-disciplinary administrative leave as state and regional attention intensifies around a missing persons case in Rusk.

The chief, widely viewed as a whistleblower, previously raised concerns involving senior figures within the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, including allegations tied to improper conduct and internal misuse of authority. Sources familiar with county dynamics tell TXAN 24 News that efforts to place the chief under investigation had been discussed for months following those disclosures.

The timing has drawn scrutiny.

According to multiple sources close to the ongoing investigation, the missing man at the center of the case was allegedly under active review or scheduled to be questioned by local law enforcement prior to his disappearance. Authorities have not publicly confirmed the nature of that inquiry or how far it progressed.

County officials have characterized the police chief’s leave as non-disciplinary, emphasizing that it does not imply wrongdoing. However, transparency advocates argue the move raises concerns given the chief’s prior role in exposing alleged misconduct and the overlapping timelines surrounding the missing person investigation.

The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office has previously denied allegations of corruption, and state investigators have stated that earlier inquiries did not result in criminal findings. Critics, however, point to recusal decisions and outside agency involvement as indicators that deeper issues may exist.

As the missing persons case continues, questions remain about whether internal conflicts, whistleblower retaliation, or unresolved institutional tensions are influencing decisions behind the scenes.

TXAN 24 News will continue to follow this developing story.
