FORT WORTH, Texas (TXAN 24) — After a competitive start, UConn turned the game into a second-half rout, pulling away from North Carolina for a decisive 63–42 win to advance.
The Tar Heels came out strong in the first quarter, even holding a slight edge early, but that momentum didn’t last long. UConn began to settle in during the second quarter, taking control before halftime and never looking back.
The third quarter is where the game completely flipped.

UConn dominated the period with a 20–5 run, overwhelming North Carolina on both ends of the floor. The Huskies’ defense clamped down, forcing tough shots and limiting second chances, while their offense found a rhythm that the Tar Heels simply couldn’t match.
By the time the fourth quarter began, the game was effectively out of reach.
UConn continued to control the pace, maintaining a comfortable double digit lead and closing things out with composure. North Carolina showed some late fight, but the deficit proved far too large to overcome.
Individually, S. Strong led the way for UConn with 21 points and 10 rebounds, anchoring a dominant performance on both ends. North Carolina’s I. Nivar finished with 20 points and 8 rebounds, providing one of the few bright spots for the Tar Heels.

In the end, it was a tale of two halves — a competitive opening that gave way to a statement performance by UConn after the break.
With the win, the Huskies move forward with momentum, showcasing the kind of second-half dominance that makes them a serious threat the rest of the way.
