TYLER, Texas (TXAN 24) — Tyler ISD has announced the full reinstatement of Tyler High School football coach Lionel Wren following the conclusion of coordinated investigations involving district officials, Tyler ISD Police, local law enforcement, and Child Protective Services.

The review stemmed from allegations that Wren physically assaulted a student-athlete during an incident on campus at Tyler High School. In response, the district activated standard safety protocols, immediately notifying authorities and launching an internal inquiry. Over the course of roughly one week, investigators interviewed approximately 60 students, staff members, and witnesses.

Officials stated that all investigative findings consistently concluded the coach did not strike the student. Instead, authorities determined Wren restrained a student-athlete who was experiencing an emotional outburst directed at staff, with multiple accounts describing efforts to de-escalate the situation and restore calm.

CPS has officially closed its case and ruled out physical abuse.

Tyler ISD Superintendent Dr. Marty Crawford said the coach’s actions were found to be within professional expectations for student safety and behavior management. He also emphasized the district’s decision to withhold public comment until all investigations were completed, stating the process must be driven by facts rather than external pressure.

Crawford acknowledged the impact the allegations had on Wren and his family and called for reflection from those who spread accusations before the conclusion of the investigation.

Tyler ISD confirmed Wren will resume full coaching duties ahead of the upcoming season.
