Two Texas High Schools Advance As Finalists In T-Mobile Friday Night 5G Lights Competition

HAMSHIRE, Texas (TXAN 24) — Two Texas high schools are in the national spotlight after advancing to the Top 40 of T-Mobile’s Friday Night 5G Lights competition, giving Texans an opportunity to help send one of the schools to the Final Four and a shot at a $1 million home-field upgrade.
Hamshire-Fannett High School in Hamshire and University High School in Waco were selected from nearly 2,500 schools nationwide. Each school has already secured $25,000 and will compete for additional funding through public voting.
The schools are the only Texas representatives among the 40 finalists.

Hamshire-Fannett is seeking funding to upgrade one of Southeast Texas’ remaining grass football fields, while University High hopes to modernize its weight room equipment, field, scoreboard and sound system.
Both schools will host T-Mobile Home Game Celebrations Friday, Oct. 9, with $25,000 check presentations taking place during the events.

Voting is open Oct. 8-25, with fans allowed to vote once per day through FridayNight5GLights.com, the T-Life app or the schools’ individual voting pages. (Hamshire-Fannet or University High)
The South Division Champion will be announced Oct. 29 and receive $250,000, a $90,000 Gronk Fitness gym upgrade and a $5,000 student leadership award.
Final voting runs Oct. 29-Nov. 8, with the $1 million grand-prize winner announced Nov. 12.
Texas has produced finalists in previous years, including Stockdale, Sunray, Dumas and Beaumont United.
