AUSTIN, Texas (TXAN 24) — Texas ranks 10th nationally for the widest gap between reported DUI crashes and DUI arrests, according to a new 50-state analysis by Grigor Law Injury and Car Accident Lawyers.

The analysis found Texas averages about 807 DUI crashes and 61,048 DUI arrests annually. Texas records 2.68 DUI crashes per 100,000 residents, compared with a national average of 2.10.

The study’s crash-to-arrest ratio for Texas is 75.63, meaning the state records roughly 76 DUI arrests for every DUI crash when comparing the study’s annual averages.

Texas ranks behind West Virginia, North Carolina, Connecticut and several other states on the list. Delaware had the narrowest gap among the states analyzed, while South Dakota recorded the largest.

Louisiana ranked second-widest and Florida ranked third-widest, while Texas’ ratio was substantially higher than both states.

The findings are based on averages compiled across the study’s 50-state dataset and are intended to compare DUI crash and enforcement patterns nationally.

The analysis does not establish why differences exist between states, and the figures should not be interpreted as a direct measure of individual law-enforcement performance.
