DALLAS, Texas (TXAN 24) — Texas ranks fifth nationally for the largest car insurance premium increases following an at-fault accident, according to a new 50-state analysis from H&P Law.

Texas drivers with a clean record pay an average of $1,603 for a six-month auto insurance policy. Following an at-fault accident, that average rises to $2,593, a 61.72% increase.

That means one crash is associated with an average increase of nearly $990 per six-month policy.

Texas had the fifth-highest increase among the 50 states analyzed. California ranked first at 68.97%, followed by Connecticut at 63.56%, Pennsylvania at 63.16% and New Jersey at 62.88%.

The Texas increase was substantially higher than those reported in neighboring states. Oklahoma ranked 46th with a 34.15% increase, while New Mexico ranked 31st with a 45.30% increase.

Texas drivers also faced a higher post-accident premium than drivers in each of those neighboring states in the analysis.

At the other end of the ranking, Rhode Island recorded the smallest increase at 10.91%.

The analysis, conducted by Courtroom Proven, compares average six-month insurance premiums for drivers without violations with premiums following an at-fault accident in 2026. Actual rates can vary based on factors including the insurer, driving history, location, vehicle, coverage and other individual characteristics.
