TEXAS (TXAN 24) — A new national study shows that Texas is one of only five states in the entire country to experience an increase in birth rates over the past three years — bucking the trend of a nationwide decline.
Researchers with the Birth Injury Lawyers Group analyzed fertility data from 2020 to 2023 using the National Center for Health Statistics. Out of all 50 states, only five posted any growth at all, and Texas ranked third among them.
According to the report, Texas’ fertility rate rose from 60.2 births per 1,000 women in 2020 to 60.6 in 2023 — a 0.66% increase. While the uptick is modest, it stands out during a period where most states saw their birth rates fall.
A spokesperson for the Birth Injury Lawyers Group noted that Texas’ growth reflects long-standing demographic and economic trends.
“Texas consistently ranks among the states with higher fertility, and its slight growth underscores the state’s expanding, diverse population,” the spokesperson said. “The Lone Star State’s booming economy and significant Hispanic population — a demographic that traditionally has higher fertility rates — are key factors in maintaining upward trends.”
The study highlights where birth rates remain resilient despite national declines. States’ full rankings and the extended dataset are available upon request.
