Team Dream Documentary Brings All-Black Women’s Volleyball Story To Dallas
DALLAS, Texas (TXAN 24) — A documentary chronicling the groundbreaking story of Team Dream, an all-Black women’s professional volleyball team, will receive a special Dallas screening Saturday ahead of its national television premiere on OWN.
WE BELONG HERE: THE STORY OF TEAM DREAM follows 12 Black women who came together in 2018 with limited practice time and competed in the USA Volleyball Open National Championship.
Led by NCAA champion Haley Eckerman, the team brought together players including Khat Bell, Kaz Brown, Victoria Thomas and Allegra Wells. The documentary explores their experiences in volleyball, their relationships with one another and the barriers they encountered as Black women in the sport.
The Dallas screening is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 26, at the African American Museum at 3536 Grand Avenue. Team Dream players are expected to participate in the special screening, with interviews scheduled for select players ahead of the event.
The film is directed by Bianca Barnes-Williams and tells the story entirely through the voices of the women featured, without an external narrator.
OWN says the documentary highlights the team’s resilience, friendship, joy and pride while examining the broader challenges surrounding representation in volleyball.
The documentary premiered at the Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival and will premiere nationally on OWN at 9 p.m. ET/PT Saturday, Sept. 26.
The Dallas screening will give local audiences an opportunity to see the story alongside members of the team featured in the film.
