Rusk County Community Outreach Organization Gives Away More Than 550 Backpacks at First “Get Groovy for School” Event

HENDERSON, Texas (TXAN 24) — Hundreds of students across Rusk County are heading into the new school year with the supplies they need after the Rusk County Community Outreach Organization exceeded its goal during its inaugural “Get Groovy for School” event.

Originally aiming to distribute 200 backpacks, the organization ultimately gave away more than 550 backpacks filled with school supplies to children from communities including Mount Enterprise, Laneville, Henderson, Carlisle, West Rusk, Overton, and Tatum.

Founded by John Ross, the organization hosted the event to bring families together while helping students prepare for a successful academic year.

One of the day’s biggest attractions came from Phats Institution of Beauty in Tyler, where a team of volunteer barbers, cosmetologists, and beauticians provided more than 50 free haircuts and hairstyles, helping students start the school year with confidence.

The celebration also featured music from DJ Juice of Blaze Radio, while Texas entertainer Jaden So Groovy energized the crowd with performances and interactions that kept children engaged throughout the event.

“This event showed what can happen when a community comes together with one purpose,” Ross said. “Giving away over 550 backpacks wasn’t just about school supplies—it was about showing our children that their community believes in them.”

Organizer John Ross thanked the sponsors, volunteers, vendors, donors, and supporters whose contributions made the event possible.

“The backpack giveaway is only the beginning of the organization’s broader mission to serve families throughout Rusk County and eventually establish a permanent community facility to expand its services year-round,” said Ross
