ARLINGTON, Texas (TXAN 24) — As hydration breaks during FIFA World Cup matches continue to divide fans, a medical professional is defending the stoppages as a necessary safeguard against heat-related illness in extreme playing conditions.

Registered Nurse Miranda Belcher, speaking through healthcare staffing platform Nursa, said player safety must remain the priority when matches are played in high heat and humidity, including conditions seen across several 2026 World Cup host cities.

During England’s match against Croatia at AT&T Stadium, fans reportedly booed a scheduled hydration break, with some critics arguing the stoppages disrupt game flow and introduce additional commercial interruptions.

Belcher rejected that framing, saying the breaks are pre-planned medical interventions based on environmental conditions and sports medicine guidance.

“When you are talking about elite football played at the highest intensity, often in hot and humid environments, the physical strain on players is enormous,” she said.

She also pointed to broader public health data showing heat-related illness continues to drive more than 100,000 emergency department visits and hospitalizations annually in the United States, a figure projected to rise as temperatures increase.

According to Belcher, hydration breaks allow athletes to cool down, rehydrate, and give medical staff time to identify early signs of heat stress—reducing the risk of more serious complications during play.

“There is a misconception that these breaks are simply interruptions to play,” she said. “In reality, they’re a planned medical safeguard.”

She also advised fans attending matches to take similar precautions, including consistent hydration, sun protection, and limiting alcohol intake in high-heat environments.

“Whether you’re watching or playing, you have to respect the heat,” she said.
