EAST TEXAS (TXAN 24) -- East Texas is home to some of the most dangerous roadways in the state, with certain intersections seeing higher rates of accidents. In an effort to raise awareness and promote safer driving habits, we’ve compiled a list of nine of the most hazardous intersections across the region, along with what drivers can do to stay safe.
T-1. US 69 (Gentry Pkwy.) & Loop 323 (Tyler): With 54 accidents in 2023, this busy commercial area is a hotspot for crashes. The high traffic flow and frequent turns increase the chances of an incident, making defensive driving even more crucial.
T-1. TX-110 & Loop 323 (Tyler): This intersection tied for the top spot with 53 accidents reported in 2023. The combination of high traffic volume and a complex intersection design has led to frequent collisions. Drivers are urged to stay alert and be cautious when navigating this area.
3. TX-31 & Loop 323 (Tyler): Recording 34 accidents in 2023, this intersection is a concern due to its high-speed traffic and frequent lane merging. Drivers should pay close attention to lane changes and adjust their speeds accordingly.
4. TX-64 & Loop 323 (Tyler): This area saw 29 accidents last year. The combination of fast-moving traffic and heavy volume makes it another key point of concern. Speed limits and caution at peak hours can make a difference here.
5. US 69 & FM 2813 (Tyler): With 23 accidents in 2023, this intersection’s high traffic volume and merging lanes continue to cause issues for drivers. Extra caution is needed, particularly during rush hours.
6. US Highway 259 (Gregg County): Historically known as the deadliest road in Gregg County, US Highway 259 saw 13 fatal crashes between 2017 and 2019. Drivers should exercise caution, especially in less populated areas where the roads may be more unpredictable.
7. Texas Highway 31 ("Bloody 31"): With dangerous hills and a reputation for fatal accidents, Texas Highway 31 is often the site of collisions, many of which involve alcohol. Drivers should avoid speeding and stay sober when traveling this stretch of road.
8. Interstate 20 (Smith County): Interstate 20 has earned its place among the most dangerous roads in East Texas due to a significant number of fatal accidents. The high speeds and long stretches between exits require heightened attention and responsible driving.
9. US Highway 69 (Cherokee County): Noted for its high fatal accident rate, US Highway 69 has become one of the deadliest roads in the region. Drivers are reminded to slow down, follow traffic laws, and be particularly cautious in inclement weather.
How to Stay Safe on Dangerous Roads
While these intersections and highways pose significant risks, drivers can take several actions to help reduce accidents:
Stay alert: Be aware of your surroundings and anticipate traffic patterns.
Follow speed limits: Always drive within the speed limit, especially at busy intersections and on highways with heavy traffic.
Avoid distractions: Put down the phone and focus on the road.
Drive defensively: Be prepared for sudden stops and lane changes.
Stay sober: Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Raising awareness about these hazardous intersections is just the first step. Together, we can make East Texas roads safer for everyone.
