SAN ANTONIO, Texas (TXAN 24) - On Thursday night the 2A-D2 State Championship saw two familiar foes as Martin Mill (32-5) and Lipan (34-5) matched up for a state title; and the game was sure to live up to the billing.
The first and second quarter were a back and forth battle of trading buckets, possession and the lead. A low scoring affair, this game's first half had a tendency to make every bucket made, a bucket that had to be earned.
The Lady Mustangs were able to be anchored by the poised play of #33 and #55 which brought a long their teammates. But every time Martin's Mill made a run, Lipan responded with a timely bucket that would ignite their crowd, bench and team.
Lipan held a 24-18 lead over Martin's Mill heading into halftime with their scoring spread out amongst four players, led by #13 Sydni Gaylor with nine points.
Martin's Mill lost some ground in the 3rd Quarter due to some 50/50 calls that went Lipan's direction and the basket on their end seemed to have a lid on it as well in the second half. The deficit for the Lady Mustags grew to as much as twelve points early in the 4th Quarter.
Gaylor, for Lipan, on the other hand was shooting into a hula hoop and had chipped in nearly 20 points with still over four minutes remaining in the contest as they clinched the win.
Final Score:
Lipan - 42
Martin's Mill - 35
