DALLAS, Texas (TXAN 24) — A new analysis is raising concerns about accountability in autonomous vehicle crashes, particularly in Dallas, where hundreds of robotaxi-related incidents have already been reported.

According to research from Beck & Beck, robotaxis have been involved in 309 crashes in Dallas alone. Despite that number, none of the six states currently allowing robotaxi operations have clear laws assigning legal fault in these incidents.

Texas received the lowest grade in the study, earning a C+ due to gaps in its legal framework. Analysts point to specific wording in state law that limits operator responsibility strictly to traffic compliance, leaving victims without a clear path to pursue compensation after a crash.

The report highlights a significant legal gray area. If a robotaxi is involved in a collision, it remains unclear whether liability falls on the manufacturer, software developer, vehicle operator, or another party entirely.

As autonomous vehicle technology continues expanding across major cities like Dallas, researchers warn that the lack of clear legal standards could leave accident victims without recourse, while also creating uncertainty for companies operating in the rapidly evolving industry.
