KERRVILLE, Texas (TXAN 24) — Search and recovery efforts continue in Kerr County after catastrophic flooding swept through the Hill Country over July 4th weekend, leaving at least 134 confirmed dead and 101 still missing statewide — 97 of those in Kerr County alone.
The floods, caused by more than 18 inches of rain in less than 36 hours, devastated parts of Kerrville, Ingram, and Camp Mystic. Rescue operations have been halted multiple times due to continued rain and rising water levels.
Officials have faced criticism over the lack of flood warnings, with some residents saying they received no alerts prior to the devastation. Local law enforcement confirmed an ongoing federal investigation into the response timeline.
Emergency shelters remain open, and volunteers from across the state are assisting with recovery and aid distribution.
Governor Abbott is expected to visit the region later this week, and FEMA has designated the area a federal disaster zone.
