AUSTIN, Texas (TXAN 24) — A mass shooting in downtown Austin early Sunday left three dead and 14 injured, with federal authorities now treating the incident as a possible act of terrorism, officials said.

The attack unfolded just before 2:00 a.m. outside Buford’s Backyard Beer Garden on West Sixth Street, a busy nightlife corridor near the University of Texas. Officers on the scene confronted the gunman, 53-year-old naturalized U.S. citizen Ndiaga Diagne of Senegal, and fatally shot him, Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis confirmed.

Emergency crews quickly transported victims to local hospitals; at least three remain in critical condition. Austin-Travis County EMS Chief Robert Luckritz credited rapid response for preventing additional casualties.

The FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force is assisting with the investigation. Officials said evidence found on the suspect and in his vehicle suggests a potential terrorism link, though investigators have not confirmed a specific motive. Law enforcement sources noted the gunman was armed with a rifle and wore a sweatshirt displaying religious symbols.

Mayor Kirk Watson and other city leaders offered condolences to victims’ families and praised first responders for their swift action. With the downtown area typically crowded on weekend nights, the attack shocked the community.

Authorities continue to examine the suspect’s background, possible ideological motivations, and whether additional threats exist. The FBI is leading the federal assessment, and Austin Police urge anyone with information to come forward.
