Jacksonville Man Found Dead

CHEROKEE COUNTY, TX (TXAN 24) — Sheriff Brent Dickson confirmed that Mason Tanner Johnston, a 28-year-old man from Jacksonville, was found dead of an apparent suicide on Monday morning at the Cherokee County Jail.

Jail staff discovered Johnston and attempted lifesaving measures, but their efforts were unsuccessful.

Johnston had been held in custody since July 30, 2021, on multiple charges, including four counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child, continuous sexual assault of a child, and assault on a public servant.

The Texas Rangers and the Cherokee County Criminal Investigation Division have launched an investigation into the incident.

Further details from the sheriff’s office are pending as the investigation continues.
