HOUSTON, Texas (TXAN 24) — With Gulf water temperatures soaring above average, forecasters are warning of an unusually active hurricane season. The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season officially began June 1 and runs through November 30, and already meteorologists are tracking multiple disturbances in the region.

One system, Invest 93L, currently located in the western Gulf, has a 40% chance of developing into a tropical cyclone within the week. Communities from Corpus Christi to Galveston are being urged to check evacuation routes and prepare emergency kits.

NOAA’s early season outlook predicted up to 25 named storms this year — significantly higher than the annual average.

“We’re expecting a very busy season, especially in the western Gulf,” said NWS Houston spokesperson Darren Ellis. “With water temps this high, even small systems can intensify quickly.”

TXAN 24’s satellite teams in South and West Texas will provide real-time updates as storms develop.
