EXCLUSIVE: Titus County Republican Executive Committee Chair Vacancy Prompts New Election

Writer: Donovan BridgeforthDonovan Bridgeforth

MOUNT PLEASANT, Texas (TXAN 24) – A recent resignation has left the Titus County Republican Executive Committee Chair position vacant, initiating a critical selection process with potential implications for local politics.

This key role, typically decided by Republican Primary voters, will now be filled by a select group within the party, highlighting the nuances of grassroots governance.

John Michael Mars, the former County Chair, resigned on January 17, 2025, during a conference call with Precinct Chairs, leaving the position unoccupied.

The Titus County Republican Party maintains a minimal online presence, with an infrequently updated website and a slightly more active Facebook page.

Under Texas Election Code, a special meeting of the Titus County Republican Executive Committee (CEC) is required to elect a new Chair.

The meeting’s time, location, and purpose must be communicated in writing to all Precinct Chairs, ensuring transparency.

The election process mandates participation by a majority of CEC members, with the candidate securing a majority vote among attendees, as per Section 171.024(a) of the Texas Election Code. Local voices are calling for greater public engagement in this process.

Community advocate Morgan Collier remarked, “I believe this meeting to elect a new Republican County Chair should be publicly posted, allowing Republican voters in Titus County to attend and observe.”

This call for openness reflects a growing demand for inclusivity in local governance.

As Titus County awaits the scheduling of this pivotal meeting, civic engagement could shape how future vacancies are handled, potentially increasing transparency and voter involvement.

TXAN 24 News has reached out to local officials, including Leslie Brosnan, Titus County Clerk, and Donna Menefee, Titus County Republican Precinct Chair, for comment. Updates will follow as more details emerge.
