LONGVIEW, Texas (TXAN 24) — The East Texas football community is mourning the loss of legendary coach Pat Collins, a man whose impact stretched from the college ranks to one of Texas’ most storied high school programs.

Before arriving in Longview, Collins cemented his name in college football history at Northeast Louisiana University (now the University of Louisiana at Monroe), leading the program to the 1987 NCAA Division I-AA National Championship — widely regarded as the greatest season in school history. That title run placed the program on the national map and remains a defining moment for the university.

Collins later brought his leadership to East Texas, guiding the Longview Lobos from 2000 to 2003. During his tenure, the Lobos reached the playoffs in three of his final four seasons, continuing the proud football tradition in Longview. Beyond wins and postseason appearances, Collins was known for developing disciplined, resilient young men and fostering a culture rooted in accountability and pride.

His contributions to the sport were recognized with induction into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame, honoring both his championship success and decades of leadership.

Coach Collins’ legacy lives on through the players, coaches and communities he influenced across Louisiana and Texas. He will be remembered not only for championships, but for the lives he helped shape along the way.
