Baton Rouge Event Aims To Bring Hope And Dignity To Children In Foster Care

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana (TXAN 24) — A national effort to support children in foster care will bring Focus on the Family leaders and Louisiana faith communities together in Baton Rouge on Oct. 7.
The initiative is designed to encourage churches and ministries to become sources of support for children and families involved in the foster care system.
Focus on the Family President and CEO Jim Daly, Vice President of Advocacy for Children Robyn Chambers and Dr. Sharen Ford, director of Foster Care and Adoption, will participate in the event.
Daly has personal experience with the foster care system and has spoken about the challenges children can face when moving between homes, including having their belongings transported in trash bags.
That experience helped inspire the organization’s Wait No More and Suitcase Bundle programs. Suitcase Bundles provide children in foster care with personal belongings packed in luggage rather than disposable bags.
A packing event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Bethany Church’s Siegen Lane Campus in Baton Rouge. Louisiana officials and representatives from Focus on the Family are expected to participate.
The Suitcase Bundle program operates in all 50 states, according to Focus on the Family.
The organization is encouraging churches and other community groups to learn how they can support children in foster care and families navigating the system.
