108,000+ Texas Households Estimated to Be Without Air Conditioning as Extreme Heat Continues

AUSTIN, Texas (TXAN 24) — As dangerous heat continues to impact Texas with temperatures expected to climb above 100 degrees in many areas, new data shows more than 108,000 households across the state may be without air conditioning.

An analysis from Hard Rock Bet using U.S. Census Bureau data estimates that 108,020 Texas households do not have air conditioning, representing approximately 1.01% of occupied households statewide.

While Texas ranks 9th in the nation for air conditioning coverage, the data highlights areas where residents may face increased risks during prolonged periods of extreme heat.

Among Texas counties with more than 100,000 occupied households, El Paso County ranks highest by percentage, with an estimated 3.7% of households without air conditioning, affecting approximately 10,964 homes.

Harris County has the highest total number of households estimated to be without AC, with 22,485 homes affected.

Other major Texas counties with households estimated to lack air conditioning include:

• Dallas County: 13,605 households (1.4%)

• Tarrant County: 6,156 households (0.8%)

• Denton County: 2,777 households (0.8%)

• Collin County: 2,408 households (0.6%)

• Bexar County: 3,696 households (0.5%)

• Travis County: 2,247 households (0.4%)

According to the analysis, states across the country vary significantly in air conditioning access, with Texas performing better than many states but still having thousands of households potentially exposed during extreme weather events.
