0 Hurricanes through the 1st month of Hurricane season in Texas Gulf Coast

HOUSTON, Texas (TXAN 24) — The Texas Gulf Coast has yet to experience a hurricane during the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season, as the Atlantic Basin approaches a historic milestone for the latest first hurricane of the season.
As of September 7, the Atlantic has recorded five named storms but no hurricanes. With September traditionally marking the peak of hurricane activity, the continued absence of a hurricane is becoming increasingly unusual.
The satellite-era record for the latest first Atlantic hurricane is September 11. That record was set in 2002 and matched again in 2013.
If the Atlantic remains hurricane-free through September 10, the 2026 season will tie the record. If the first hurricane does not form until September 12 or later, the season would establish a new satellite-era record for the latest first hurricane.
Texas has still experienced tropical weather this season. Tropical Storm Edouard reached the Texas-Louisiana border region earlier this month, bringing heavy rainfall and gusty winds to portions of Southeast Texas. However, the storm never strengthened into a hurricane.
Despite the unusually quiet start, officials continue to urge Gulf Coast residents to remain prepared. Hurricane season runs through November 30, and conditions can change quickly during the peak months.
For now, the Texas Gulf Coast remains hurricane-free—and the Atlantic is just days away from potentially making weather history.
