HOUSTON, Texas (TXAN 24) — The legendary Houston Comets are officially returning to the WNBA in 2027 after league owners approved the relocation of the Connecticut Sun to Houston.
The team will reportedly play at Toyota Center under the ownership of Tilman Fertitta, bringing professional women’s basketball back to one of the league’s original markets for the first time since 2008.
The Comets were one of the WNBA’s founding franchises in 1997 and quickly became the league’s first dynasty, winning four straight championships from 1997 through 2000 behind stars Sheryl Swoopes, Cynthia Cooper and Tina Thompson.
Houston’s return comes during a period of major growth for the WNBA as attendance, television ratings and franchise values continue to rise across the league. The revived Comets franchise is expected to retain the current basketball operations and roster structure of the Sun organization ahead of the 2027 season.
The move restores one of the most recognizable brands in women’s basketball and gives Texas a second WNBA franchise alongside the Dallas Wings.
