EAST TEXAS (TXAN 24) — Longview native Haynes King was on-air Saturday morning during ESPN’s College GameDay when he pulled off a feat that blended skill, confidence, and a little East Texas grit.
While warming up ahead of Georgia Tech’s matchup against Clemson, King joined the GameDay crew for a live remote interview. In classic Pat McAfee fashion, the host threw out a challenge: if King could hit the crossbar of the goalpost on a throw during the segment, McAfee would donate $100,000.
King didn’t flinch. On camera, he dropped back, let it fly, and the ball clanged off the crossbar.
For East Texans, it was a signature reminder of the poise and talent that carried King from Longview High School stardom to the college football spotlight.
As a Lobo, King led his team to a Class 6A Division II state championship in 2018, cementing his place as one of the most celebrated quarterbacks to come out of the region.
Now at Georgia Tech, his success continues to draw national attention — and Saturday’s viral moment only added to the growing legend.
From Longview to College GameDay, Haynes King is proving that East Texas quarterbacks can shine on the biggest stage.
