TYLER, Texas (TXAN 24) — A newly circulated analysis claiming to rank the “most vulnerable states” ahead of a projected Social Security trust fund shortfall is drawing attention online, but experts caution the figures and methodology do not align with federal projections.

The report, which cites millions of Americans receiving benefits and references a supposed 2032 depletion date, lists states such as Vermont, Maine, Pennsylvania, and Florida as most exposed based on a “composite injury and dependency index.” However, the framework blends unrelated metrics—including workplace fatality rates for older workers—with Social Security dependency levels, creating a ranking that analysts say does not reflect how the system is actually funded or evaluated.

Federal projections from the Social Security Administration and the Congressional Budget Office typically assess long-term solvency using national payroll tax revenue, demographic trends, wage growth, and benefit obligations—not state-by-state occupational safety data or composite scoring systems. While recent trustee reports have projected funding pressure in the mid-2030s under current law assumptions, those estimates vary and are not fixed cutoff dates.

Economists note that Social Security’s financial outlook is uniform nationwide, meaning no single state is uniquely responsible for or insulated from system-wide changes. However, states with older populations may feel economic impacts more acutely due to higher concentrations of retirees and benefit recipients.

The report underscores growing public concern about retirement security, but experts urge caution in interpreting unverified indices as policy forecasts. Federal agencies have not issued any state-level “vulnerability rankings” tied to program solvency.
