Smith County Declares January 24 as Coach C.L. Nix Day

WHITEHOUSE, Texas (TXAN 24) — Smith County has officially designated January 24 as Coach C.L. Nix Day, honoring the legendary Whitehouse High School basketball coach whose impact on East Texas sports and his community is still celebrated today.


Coach Nix, who passed away in 2020 at the age of 87, devoted 30 years to coaching at Whitehouse, where he amassed an incredible 714 career wins and led his teams to 26 district championships. His legacy of excellence was further recognized in May 2024 when he was posthumously inducted into the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame.


This newly established day not only pays tribute to his accomplishments on the court but also highlights the positive influence he had on generations of student-athletes. Known as a mentor, teacher, and community leader, Coach Nix’s dedication extended far beyond basketball, leaving a lasting impression on East Texas.


The Smith County Commissioner’s Court’s decision to dedicate January 24 to Coach Nix ensures his contributions to the sport and the community will be celebrated annually. His story serves as an inspiration to those who strive to make a difference both on and off the court.


Coach Nix’s legacy lives on, reminding us all of the power of hard work, mentorship, and community.
