TYLER, Texas (TXAN 24) — A new data analysis examining residential arson trends across the United States claims that 13 states saw increases in 2025, even as most of the country reported declines.

The report, which cites a cross-referenced review of federal crime data from the FBI Crime Data Explorer and 2024–2025 state-level comparisons, says Alaska recorded the largest percentage increase in residential arson at +53.8%, rising from 26 to 40 reported incidents.

Other states listed as seeing notable increases include Mississippi (+39.2%), Connecticut (+32.8%), Utah (+31.5%), and New Mexico (+30.7%). Smaller increases were reported in states such as Minnesota, Rhode Island, and Idaho.

At the same time, the analysis indicates 37 states experienced year-over-year declines in residential arson incidents. Among the largest decreases were New York, which reportedly dropped from 695 incidents in 2024 to 554 in 2025, and Louisiana, which fell by 27%.

The dataset, circulated through a privately compiled methodology summary, has not been independently verified by federal agencies, and officials have not released a finalized national 2025 breakdown of residential arson trends.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation typically publishes finalized Uniform Crime Reporting data on a delayed schedule, meaning preliminary or independently compiled comparisons may not reflect finalized national statistics.

Despite those limitations, the report highlights ongoing concerns among law enforcement analysts about localized spikes in property-related fire crimes, even as broader national trends continue to show overall declines in violent and property offenses in many regions.

Officials encourage the public to rely on verified federal releases when assessing long-term crime trends.
